For Parents

As traumatic as an amputation can be, for both the child/teen and the family, amputations no longer put any limits on what someone can do. There are amputees in all walks of life. If you haven't already done so, be sure to read Jennifer's Story. Jennifer lost a portion of all four limbs - both hands and both lower legs - yet she was quickly walking on prosthetics, driving, and back to work as a paralegal as well as putting together the P.L.A.Y. Foundation. And there are amputees active in music and arts at a professional level, and in sports - at a competitive level in running, biking, swimming, climbing, surfing - in just about every sport or activity you can imagine.

Living an active life and pursuing these types of sports and activities can help an amputee not only learn to lead a healthy, active, positive lifestyle but also helps the child/teen show their peers that the amputation does not limit them in any way.

In some cases the activity may cost more than you can afford at this time. This is where the P.L.A.Y. Foundation can also assist you. You can apply for your child/teen to receive a P.L.A.Y. Foundation Award to help with the financial costs of the chosen activity. You can get information on who is eligible and how to apply on our How To Apply Page.

To get information on some of the many camps and activities available, see our Resources & Activities Page.

If you are unable to locate on that page the kind of activity that interests your child/teen, contact us at info@playfoundation.net. We will be happy to try to assist you in locating the appropriate facility at which the activity can be done.

We will soon be adding personal stories from amputee athletes to help show your child/teen that they have no limits on what they can do. Please be sure to watch for this and share the stories with your child/teen.
